Our Past

2006 marks the 140th anniversary of the first game

between club teams in Northern Virginia; the Old

Dominions played the Mount Vernons in a September

4, 1866 matinee near the riverfront in Alexandria.

Baltimore’s love affair with the national game exploded

after the Civil War; the first Maryland State

Base-Ball Association meeting in 1867 drew 30

clubs, including the Pastimes and the Chesapeakes.

Within a decade, Baltimore would be fielding the

first in a long line of championship teams.

Even before the war of the rebellion, clubs like the

Nationals and the Potomacs were forming in Washington

as the young gentlemen of the capital sought

recreation and comraderie. After the Union was

restored, Washington’s Nationals would make a

whistlestop tour of the western states that did more

than anything else to spread baseball across the

country and make it our national pastime.

Our Future

The Chesapeake and Potomac

Base Ball Club is forming to represent the

Washington and Baltimore areas with vintage baseball

teams playing by the rules and customs of the

1860s. Recreate a time when the greatest of sports

was becoming the true national pastime.
